# Hierom heeft van der Valk een Toekan als logo

Dit is het verhaal over hoe een familie met Valk als naam, een soort van papegaai, een Toekan als logo heeft. Wie gebruikt er een Toekan als je Valk heet.... Zo was Gerrit van der Valk: vreemd, eigenzinnig, je zou bijna denken naïef.
Van der Valk is een familiebedrijf, gestart in 1939, toen Martien van der Valk sr. het dranklokaal De Gouden Leeuw in Voorschoten verbouwde tot een hotel. Het was zijn streven elk van zijn elf kinderen een eigen hotel te geven.
Gerrit van der Valk, kreeg het zesde hotel en werd de concernleider. Hij heeft het Van der Valk concern groot gemaakt, en stichtte behalve hotels ook motels.

‘Eten bij Van der Valk’ betekende voor veel Nederlanders in de afgelopen decennia de eerste kennismaking met een restaurant. Horeca Nederland noemt Gerrit van der Valk een ‘icoon’ van het vak. Hij maakte het restaurant voor iedere Nederlander ‘laagdrempelig en toegankelijk’. Inmiddels is van der Valk tot ver over onze landsgrenzen te vinden:
• 68 vestigingen in Nederland
• 13 in Duitsland
• 9 in België
• 3 in Frankrijk
• 1 in Spanje
• 1 in Florida (Verenigde Staten)
• 1 op Aruba
• 1 op Bonaire
• 1 op Curaçao
## Waarom de Toekan?
Het is een van de meest gestelde vragen aan de familie Van der Valk: waarom hebben jullie een Toekan op je dak en geen Valk? Het antwoord is te vinden in de aankoop van vogelpark [Avifauna.](http://www.avifauna.nl/home/)
De familie was op zoek naar een symbool voor de hele familie. Zo net na de oorlog hadden veel mensen nog nare herinneringen aan de roofvogelsymboliek die door de nazi’s werd gebruikt. Zoals Gerrit van der Valk zei: “Als een valk slaapt is ’t niks en gaat hij op roof uit, dan is het net een adelaar. Een toekan is een mooie, grote, tropische vogel, een vrolijk beest, een gezellig beest, dat past veel beter bij ons”.
Eigenlijk nuchter en klaar helder! Marketing hoeft helemaal niet moeilijk te zijn...
